With boating season coming to an end, you may be wondering how to change the gear lube/oil in your lower unit.  Although there is some debate on whether you should change your lower unit oil at the start or at the end of the season, I like to change mine at the end.  I do this because used oil is acidic and can erode seals and other components while the motor sits in storage during the winter.

Your boat motor’s lower unit is continuously exposed to water.  If water infiltrates the lower unit, the gear lube can foam, which compromises wear protection.
